CAEC vs Diploma: What’s the Difference, and Does It Matter?

Updated: May 26

If you’re an adult thinking about finishing your high school education, you’ve probably come across the term CAEC — and maybe wondered how it stacks up against a diploma.

That question — CAEC vs Diploma — is one many adult learners ask, and the answer depends on your goals.

You’re not alone.

So let’s break it down in plain language.

CAEC vs Diploma: Understanding Your Options

✅ What’s a CAEC?

Four people smiling and studying CAEC around a table with laptops and papers, near a large window. Bright, cheerful atmosphere.

CAEC stands for Canadian Adult Education Credential. It’s the new high school equivalency for adults in Alberta — and across Canada — replacing the GED.

It shows that you’ve got the same general knowledge and skills as someone who finished high school. Instead of taking years of classes, you write five tests:

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Math

  • Science

  • Social Studies

If you pass them all, you’ve earned your CAEC — and you’ve opened the door to new jobs, post-secondary training, and career opportunities.

✅ What’s a High School Diploma?

A high school diploma is what most students earn in traditional high school — by

completing a full set of Alberta Education credits over several years. That includes core subjects like English, Math, Science, and Social Studies, along with extras like Physical Education, electives, and career prep.

But adults can earn a diploma too — usually through upgrading programs offered by colleges such as:

  • Northern Lakes College

  • Portage College

  • Athabasca University

These diploma pathways are ideal if you:

  • Need specific Alberta Education courses (e.g. Math 30-1, Bio 30)

  • Plan to apply to a competitive college or university

  • Require a diploma for job qualifications or immigration purposes

For more information on diploma options in Alberta, you can also visit the Alberta Education Equivalency Diploma page for official details.

However, adult upgrading programs are not free after age 20. For example, one course at NorQuest College may cost around $610, with additional fees bringing the total to approximately $1,396.50 per course. If cost is a barrier, many colleges offer bursaries or financial assistance — especially for low-income students or those on a career learning plan.

So… Which One Should You Choose?

That depends on your goals.

If you need specific courses or want to apply to a competitive university program, upgrading for a diploma might be the right path — even if it takes more time and money.

But if you’re looking for a faster, flexible way to finish your high school education, the CAEC is a great option. It’s recognized by Trades Alberta, some colleges and employers, accepted by many immigration pathways (with an ECA), and lets you move at your own pace — without going back to high school.
