Finding Friendship After 55: Join Our Mentorship Program for Seniors and Newcomers in Peace River

Looking for Meaning in Retirement?

Become a mentor — and make a difference.

At Vision Learning Centre, we’re building something special: a mentorship program that brings seniors and newcomerstogether in a way that creates real impact.

Our Newcomer Mentorship Program, proudly supported by the New Horizons for Seniors Program, connects long-time residents with newcomers who are trying to make a life here — but don’t have the support they need.

And the truth is, community changes everything.

Why Mentorship for Newcomers in Peace River Matters

Many newcomers arrive in Peace River excited but isolated. They’ve left behind strong support networks — extended family, lifelong friends, and vibrant communities — and are trying to navigate a completely new culture alone.

They’re not just learning English.

They’re learning how to belong here.

That’s where you come in.

This mentorship program for seniors and newcomers in Peace River helps build confidence, belonging and real friendship - one weekly visit or phone call at a time.

What Do Mentors and Newcomers

Do Together?

The goal is connection — and that can look different for every pair.

Some of our favourite mentorship moments have been simple, local, and deeply meaningful.

You might:

  • Go for coffee or a walk along the Peace River

  • Attend a local event together — like the Boat Races, Trade Show, or Peace Players performance

  • Show them how to find the best groceries, or how to shop smart at local stores

  • Help them book a doctor’s appointment — and explain what to do if no one’s available

  • Invite them to Carnaval, the farmers market, a library program, or a community BBQ

  • Share stories and laughter over a picnic or a trip to Freson Bros.

You’re not expected to teach English or cover school topics. You’re helping someone build a life here — one conversation at a time.

How It Works

  • Time commitment: Just one visit a week (flexible days and times)

  • Training: We’ll walk you through what to expect — and we’re here for questions anytime

  • Support: We’ll help you get started and match you with someone who fits your personality and interests

  • One-on-one Connection: You'll build a personal relationship with your match - no group meetings or classes required.

Why Seniors?

We’ve seen again and again: seniors make incredible mentors.

You have wisdom, experience, and a calming presence that makes people feel safe. You know the ins and outs of Peace River — and the heart behind what it means to live here.

This is your chance to pass that on.

Ready to Change a Life?

Whether you’re newly retired or just looking to fill your days with something that matters, we’d love to meet you.

Let’s make Peace River a little warmer — together.
